Pre-Professional
Program
and Professional Program
The College of Engineering recognizes two distinct
levels in the program of study leading to the Bachelor of Science
Degree in Engineering. Work which is normally completed during the
freshman and sophomore year is designated the "Pre-Professional
Program." The remainder of the requirements for the degree
program constitute the "Professional Program."
The principal feature of the bi-level engineering curriculum structure
is that certain admission criteria must be satisfied before credit
can be earned in the Professional Program of the Mechanical Engineering
Program. These criteria are distinct from the general University
requirements; see the Undergraduate Catalog.
Students enter the Professional Program via the Pre-Professional
Program normally after their sophomore year. Transfer students could,
possibly, enter the Professional Program during their first semester
of attendance if the Pre-Professional requirements are met
Pre-Professional Program
All students enter Mechanical Engineering in the Pre-Professional
Program. Advising of the Pre-Professional students has the objective
of helping students finish the Pre-Professional program as soon
as is appropriate. Restrictions are placed on enrollment in Professional
Program courses by students in the Pre-Professional category.
Applications for admission to the Professional Program will be
processed after the department receives documentation that all admission
requirements have been completed.
Professional Program
All Mechanical Engineering students who have completed the necessary
requirements may apply to the department for admission to the Professional
Program Program.
Requirements for admission include the following:
-
Completion of all courses listed for the freshman and sophomore
years in the degree program.
-
At least a C average over all courses attempted. A "D
grade rule" is enforced by the College of Engineering,
see page 107 of the Undergraduate Catalog.
-
At least a C average over the required mathematics, science,
and engineering courses.
-
An acceptably small number of "W" grades and course
repeats. As many as six "Ws" are acceptable - more
will result in a careful evaluation of the application for admission.
Note: The three
attempt rule for a single course is strictly enforced by the
College of Engineering.
It is each student's responsibility to apply for admission to the
Professional Program Program when the above requirements are filled.
The student's adviser will assist, if necessary.
