Areas of Expertise: Fluid dynamics, shock and
viscous phenomena, aerodynamic heating, jets and sprays, supersonic
and hypersonic flows, propulsion, detonation, fuel reformation and
power production, fail-safe construction, shape memory alloys, natural
convection, flow visualization, and instrumentation and facility
development.
Background:As a Research Assistant at Princeton University and at Penn State University, Dr. Lu performed basic research which contributed to the understanding of complex shock interaction flowfields at supersonic speeds. He joined UT Arlington in 1987 and he is presently Director of the Aerodynamics Research Center. The ARC is unique amongst universities in that it houses a complex of experimental facilities from low speed to hypersonic, as well as state-of-the-art instrumentation. His present work involves the development of pulse detonation engines, combustion, hypersonic propulsion, weakly ionized flows, shock/boundary layer interactions, flow control, energy conversion, natural convection of large enclosures and electronic packaging. He has presented over 120 conference papers, published over thirty journal articles and three book chapters, and co-edited a volume on hypersonic test facilities. He has three patents and a number of patents pending. His research has been supported by federal, state and private sources. He has also collaborated with researchers in Korea, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan.
