Nitin Uppal Awarded Newport-Spectral Physics Research Excellence Travel Award
Mr. Nitin Uppal, a PhD candidate in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, was awarded a Newport - Spectral Physics Research Excellence Travel award to attend the SPIE Photonics West conference from 19-24 January 2008. This award was made to only 15 students based on the quality of the original research described in the submitted papers. Mr. Uppal presented one conference paper, "Three dimensional waveguides fabricated in PMMA using a femtosecond laser micromachining system", authors: Uppal, Shiakolas, and Rizwan, and one poster, "Experiments and characterization of two photon polymerization using a 1 kHz femtosecond laser system", authors: Uppal and Shiakolas, on his research work under the direction of Dr. Panos S. Shiakolas.
SPIE Student Services hosted the Student Lunch with the Experts, to give students a chance to network and gain advice from industry and academic leaders. The Newport and Spectra-Physics Research Excellence Travel Awards presentations were made during the lunch. Randy Heyler, senior director of Strategic Marketing for Newport, presented $15,000 in travel awards to student researchers at a luncheon at SPIE Photonics West.
